The project

Project Objectives

Objective of this project is the implementation, validation and demonstration up to the commercial phase of an innovative and flexible device mounted on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), named in the following TherVIS.

The device is suitable for:

  • 1) mapping energy building performance for energy saving within large extent areas (e.g. building blocks, districts, small communities),
  • 2) evaluating structural health of civilian infrastructures (including bridges, new, old and historical buildings, pipelines, etc.) for public security.

This procurement receives funding under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the grant agreement No 650206

Project Details

Because of their long life-cycle, the majority of buildings have aged considerably and are likely to have significant levels of phisical degradation in their structure. The ability to identify where this degradation has occurred and to monitor the integrity of building structures, can provide opportunities to improve energy efficiency by reducing heat losses.

For minimizing energy losses TherVIS device is proposed, consisting in a monitoring device integrating a new generation thermal camera coupled with a stereo camera or laser scanning. The monitoring system is mounted on a micro-UAV equipped with different navigation sensors, stabilized by a microcontroller-based flight control and basically operated by GPS navigation or manual remote control. An innovative methodology would be implemented allowing the 3D aerial pictures and thermal images, acquired at a high sensitivity rate, high speed and low frequency, to be automatically integrated in a combined 3D spatial-thermal image within a purposely-built model.

A micro-UAV equipped with different navigation sensors, stabilized by a microcontroller-based flight control and basically operated by GPS navigation or manual remote control carries out some integrated visual and IR sensors for data acquisition.

Laser scanner

Large quantities of high resolution 3D data of the building façade are acquired using a laser scanner suitable for UAV.

Using high-resolution cameras visual images of the structures are captured that are represented by means of photogrammetry techniques.

Thermographic images of the structures are collected and stored.

Through built on purpose software, all the collected data (thermal, 3D and visual) can be used to increase the energy efficiency through the mapping and the forecast of the emitted energy of the buildings and/or to solve security issues through the assessment of structural integrity.

Investing in the TherVIS project would contribute to the development of a systemic approach for reducing building energy demand and for dealing in an efficient way with emergency or post-emergency situations fostering the Smart Cities concept. Based on service and selling previsions the environmental benefit associated with the use of the TherVIS devices in terms of reduction of methane (CH4) and hence CO2 emissions have been evaluated. According to it, the environmental impact related to tool usage, under the assumption that to each TherVIS monitoring corresponds an energy building renovation action, a reference value of almost 120.000 tonns of CO2 reduction is forecasted after the first five years of TherVIS usage, resulting in a tangible contribution to CO2 emission reduction

Our Company

The company TEA Sistemi was founded in 1997 as a spin-off of the Center TEA (Energy Technology and Environment) with the main objective to promote the transfer and commercialization of the results obtained in the field of Research and Development. The group, through the experience gained by its researchers, offers products to market and highly specialized services and with a strong innovation in the field of energy and environment. Tea Sistemi operates broad-spectrum research, supported by the Laboratory TEA, in which you can conduct experiments on an industrial scale. Huge investments have been made for providing the laboratory instrumentation necessary for the conduct of R & D, design and testing of equipment and processes for the industry.

The company is organized in the following departments: process engineering, environmental studies, security studies, process studies and risk analysis, equipment and instrumentation. The technical background of the company draws on the research activities carried out by Professor Paolo Andreussi University of Pisa in the field of multiphase flow and applied fluid mechanics. At present, Prof. Andreussi, CEO of the company, is also the director of R&D. The R&D of the company relays on a department for the protection of intellectual property and three dedicated units: Software Development, Information Technology/Robotics and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Tea Sistemi has already invested in the environmental sector in particular in the context of air monitoring devices coupled with the use of drones, through the implementation of models to characterize the weather conditions and a proprietary methodology for quantifying and localization of greenhouse gases.
